Australian History Summit Workshops, August
- On the 18th July The Hon Julie Bishop issued a media release announcing the staging of an Australian History Summit to be held at Parliament House 17 August. These workshops (three in total) were organised to discuss ideas (with a number of interested parties) to present to the minister.
Transnational Lives/Biography Across Boundaries, 26-28 July
-This conference was convened by Professor Desley Deacon, History Program, Dr Penny Russell, University of Sydney and Professor Angela Woollacott, Macquarie University. The conference covered what difference does it make to biography and to history to think of lives as transnational? What conceptual work do we have to do to think about lives as transnational? What makes a life transnational? and other topics.

Genres of History, 3-7 July, Manning Clark Theatres, ANU - This conference was hosted by The Australian Defence Force Academy (UNSW) and The Australian National University. The organising committee was Elanor Hancock, Anthea Hyslop, Paul Pickering and Tim Rowse. The conference consisted of 68 AHA conference sessions and four sessions by the Australian Network for Research in Women's History.
Heads of History Conference, 3 July - Heads of History Conference was held over one day and was a closed session for Heads only (or their representatives). The meeting was convened by Tom Griffiths and Tim Rowse.

Using Lives: a postgraduate workshop in biography, 6-10 February, ANU
- The ADB, History and Humanities Research Centre convened a workshop for postgraduate students working in biography and life history. This workshop provided a forum in which students working on aspects of biography can discuss, reflect on, and debate aspects of the 'biographical turn' in scholarship, publication and media, as it relates to their work, and to their opportunities for professional development.

History Through A Lens Exhibition and Symposium, June 30-July 1, National Museum of Australia
- Convened by Frances Peters-Little, the symposium included photographers and filmmakers, performers, academics, museum professionals and community representatives.
Film Festival, 'Two Fires Festival' honouring the life of Judith Wright, March, Braidwood - Frances Peters-Little coordinated the film section of this four-day interdisciplinary festival, which also involved conference presentations by Dr Briscoe and Dr Griffiths.
Our Community: A Great Place to be, June-July, National Museum of Australia, and touring NSW later in the year - Curated by Frances Peters-Little of the Australian Centre for Indigenous History in collaboration with staff at the National Museum of Australia, this significant photography exhibition included fifty-five black and white photographs by three distinguished photographers (Juno Gemes, Sharon Aldrick and Ron Blake) and explored the distinctive and diverse multicultural mix of communities in northwest NSW, with a focus on Walgett and Lightning Ridge.
Exchanging Histories, September, Broome, WA - A five-day workshop organised by the Australian Centre for Indigenous History in collaboration with the Goolarri Media Enterprises and the National Museum of Australia. The workshop investigated Indigenous Australian historical practices, identified constructive methods of cross-cultural collaboration, and conducted interviews with Indigenous visual artists, musicians, performing artists, writers and media workers.
Civil Society, Religion and Global Governance: Paradigms of Power and Persuasion, 1-2 September, National Museum of Australia - A two-day international conference convened by Dr Helen James, and supported by AUSAID, the Canadian High Commission and many departments of the ANU.

Graduation Ceremony - 17 December 2004
Talking and Listening in the Age of Modernity, 1 December 2004 - A one-day conference convened by Professor Desley Deacon and Professor Joy Damousi (University of Melbourne). Scholars from throughout Australia used this interdisciplinary one-day conference to explore the cultural meanings of the auditory and its relationship to isues such as modernity, gender, race and sexuality. The conference investigated themes such as speech, sound, music, voice and technologies of sound in radio and film.
Environmental History PhD Workshop was held at the ANU from 25-29 October 2004 - The second biennial national workshop in Environmental History held over five days with 16 doctoral students from around Australia and featuring scholars from the University of Technology, Sydney (Assoc-Prof Heather Goodall), the University of Queensland (Dr Christy Collis) and the ANU (Dr Mark McKenna and Dr Kirsty Douglas). Sponsored by RSSS, CRES and the National Institute for the Environment, and organised by Dr Tom Griffiths (History, RSSS) and Dr Libby Robin (CRES).
