Kangaroos and Dragons: The 1923 Chinese Football Tour of Australia

Supervisor: Nicholas Brown


Nick Guoth has recently taken up the discipline of historical study. He has a degree from Macquarie University in Statistics and Computing, awarded in 1985 and has been working in the area of IT at the ANU since. In 2000, Nick became interested in sports history, with a specialisation in football (soccer), and has since published a number of articles on the subject. He also holds a position as a Visiting Fellow in the Faculty of Arts, ANU since 2005. Nick resides in the Mathematical Sciences Institute and is a part-time postgraduate student.
His thesis analyses the 1923 Chinese football tour of Australia in the light of the White Australia Policy. It is a study of the relationships and attitudes of Australians to the Chinese and the tour itself, while also investigating the changes to sporting culture in Australia due to the tour.
